Rachel’s getting an ear! With your help.

Rushing to the ER to deliver twins with her husband out of town is something no mom ever wants to do! But the twins were not going to wait for anyone! Rachel was born and Amy Jo was told that she was heathy and doing fine, but that her right ear seemed off. They thought maybe it was folded in on itself and that it could unfold and be fine. As the days went on with healthy growing girls in the NICU, Rachel’s ear unfolded a little and revealed that her ear was not fully developed and was lacking shape and an ear canal—this is called Microtia Atresia. No parent ever wants to hear that something is wrong or amiss with their child. Because of the complications with Rachel’s ear, further tests revealed that she has a handful of other conditions including scoliosis, an ASD (heart), hearing loss, strabismus (eyes), and FPIES (food allergies). After many years of thought, research, and prayers, Amy Jo and David decided to pursue the route of ear reconstruction for Rachel. They chose a world class surgeon that developed a revolutionary surgical process that is far less invasive than any other Microtia repair of its kind.

This surgery is considered an elective surgery and is not covered by insurance. In April of this year Rachel is getting what she calls “a new ear!” She’s excited to have it help hold her glasses up and put her cute hair behind her ear. This road the Gourdins are about to walk is a tough one: a 6 hr surgery, a two week stay out of town from where they live, and months of recovery and care. But in the end it’s something that can help Rachel feel whole and confident the rest of her life!
