Help Rachel continue getting the care she deserves

Help us continue giving Rachel the care and support she needs and deserves.

On December 18, 2014 my mother Rachel was visiting friends in Maine. While there, someone broke into the house and shot her multiple times. One of those bullets hit her in the back of the head and is still there today.

As a result of that night, Rachel suffers from a brain injury and nerve damage which has severely impacted her life and caused her to require constant care and assistance. For almost 4 years after the incident she lived with her brother and myself, but over time it became apparent that she required more medical care and attention than could be provided by us.

In May 2018 my family and I made the hard decision to place my mom in assisted living. It had become increasingly difficult to care for her while working full time and in-home care just didn’t seem to be enough. We had hoped for a positive outcome, and to our surprise it turned out to be the best decision we could’ve made for her. She finally has the constant attention and community that she has always thrived with. The residential care unit specializes in memory loss and she is now receiving the care that she deserves. This place has done wonders for Rachel’s spirit and wellbeing, allowing her to live a more fulfilling life. Despite her injuries and suffering, Rachel still maintains the positive outlook and upbeat personality of the woman I remember from before the incident. It has been truly inspiring to witness considering her situation.

Unfortunately, the cost for care is high and while she is eligible for state funded care, we have to wait for a state funded bed to become available in the care unit. This means that we just have to wait it out, and while we have been trying to, we are at the point where we are no longer be able to sustain keeping Rachel in this facility without the state funds much longer. We are constantly looking into other facilities and staying in touch with units to find if a bed is available, but we haven’t had much luck. We are hoping that with a little help from our community we can maintain her placement in the residential care unit just until a state funded bed becomes available.

Every little bit helps and we’d like to thank you for the outpouring of support and encouragement we’ve received over the past few years.
