Dear community,
Hi! I'm Rachel - I am a dance artist and filmmaker currently residing in Los Angeles, CA, attending California Institute of the Arts in the MFA Film/Video program.
I am incredibly honored to be part of this community of artists and am looking forward to what lies ahead in my second year, starting this Fall 2022. While I was graciously awarded a scholarship and TA position, offering a small stipend, grad school is no small financial feat; I am asking for monetary support to help fund my cost of living for my upcoming year of study. If you feel led to contribute, money donated will be put towards costs such as rent, food, transportation, books and supplies, tech fees, etc. Any amount is helpful and gratefully welcomed.
I was first exposed to film through my career of studying dance. I have since been investigating the relationship of camera, camera operator, and dancer(s), and I've found many opportunities to explore this while at CalArts. Ultimately, I'm working to strengthen my skills as a cinematographer, and all-around filmmaker, to support directors' visions and heighten my own work and creative process. The program at CalArts supports this intention through coursework on valuable vocational skills, challenging me to become a complete filmmaker and providing the opportunity to practice different approaches to film.
I am pursuing the study of film as I yearn to expand my career as a multi-faceted artist; I aspire to create more agency in my work. As video-making is growing increasingly accessible, I aim to inspire intentionality in video and media. In film, television, and video, I gravitate towards productions that spark thought and conversation while inviting me to self-reflect and empathize with the world around me. As I aspire to create work like this, I am in this course of study with the goal of knowing my tools well and challenging my current, assumed boundaries of film.
My future aspirations are maintained within further fostering a career as an independent, versatile artist. As a striving professional, I yearn to create video installations for museums around the world, to work on independent film sets, and to create experimental films of my own. Creating work that connects others to themselves and those around them is powerful and motivating. By deepening my knowledge in film, I aspire to create media that ignites sensation.

Thank you for your generous time in reading my aspirations. Your support, in any capacity, is so greatly appreciated.
