On Wednesday, June 5th, a devastating, freak electrical fire tore through the apartment of our dear friend Rachael and her 6-year-old son, Kai—just days before his 7th birthday. In a matter of moments, they lost everything: their home, their belongings, and the sense of safety and security that every family deserves.

But the heartbreak didn’t stop there.

Rachael was the first to discover the fire and ran inside without hesitation, trying desperately to save their two beloved cats. Tragically, Stitches did not survive. Their other cat, Donovan, miraculously made it out alive, but spent four days in the animal hospital and is now home recovering with a feeding tube and requiring round the clock care.

Rachael does have renters insurance and we are hopeful that it will fully cover the costs of the apartment damage. Unfortunately only a small fraction of their personal belongings will be replaced. Everything else, from clothes and furniture to Kai’s toys, books, and beloved Pokémon cards, must be replaced out of pocket.

We’re raising funds to help Rachael, Kai, and Donovan get back on their feet.

Donations will go toward:

• Replacing household essentials, clothing, and furniture

• Kai’s toys, books, school supplies and of course- Pokémon

• Veterinary care for Donovan’s medical bills and ongoing recovery

• Temporary housing and immediate daily needs

Rachael is an incredibly strong and loving person—a devoted mom, a great friend and true animal lover who risked her own safety to save her pets. Now it’s our turn to show up for her, Kai, and Donovan with the support and compassion they need to heal and rebuild.
