Writer and photographer Emmett J. Stanton traveled to five continents and more than 70 countries, conducting hundreds of interviews to document the greatest crisis of the 21st century: human migration.
From the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya in western Myanmar to the treatment of Haitian laborers in the Dominican Republic, from migrant boats sinking in the Mediterranean to economic refugees fleeing Venezuela, the 2010s witnessed many of the largest migration crises since World War II.
Across dozens of missions with the IOM, the ILO, the WHO, the UNHCR, and more, these stories make the front page but leave just as quickly, yet the crises continue long after the news cycle moves on.
Coming in early 2025, ‘Gimme Shelter’ is a retrospective of the most challenging moments of those missions: a month spent on board a rescue boat patrolling the Mediterranean, crossing on foot from Hungary to Greece, illegally entering Venezuela in the dead of night, and the whiplash of going from a warzone to the 'Jeopardy!' stage in the span of three months.
