We’re reaching out on behalf of our beloved neighbours, Terry and Holger Herrmann, who are both facing the final stages of life while navigating overwhelming emotional, physical, and financial challenges.

Who They Are

Many in Port Coquitlam will recognize Terry, who lovingly managed The Learning Experience Childcare Center at Irvine Elementary for over 25 years. Through her tireless dedication, she helped raise generations of children and supported countless families. Her warmth, compassion, and commitment have left a lasting legacy in our community.

At home, Terry has also spent the past 20 years as the primary caregiver to her husband, Holger, who was forced into early retirement after being diagnosed with a debilitating illness. As Holger’s condition steadily declined, Terry cared for him with unwavering selflessness, strength, and love.

Why We’re Asking for Help

Just over a year ago, Terry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. After enduring aggressive treatment and surgery, she was thrilled to be declared cancer-free earlier this year. Tragically, only eight weeks later, she learned the cancer had returned and spread throughout her body. Her doctors have now confirmed that her illness is terminal.

Terry is currently hospitalized with complications from cancer in her liver. She remains in good spirits but is experiencing confusion, delirium, and pain. If her condition stabilizes, she will return home—but will require 24-hour care, as will Holger, who continues to rely on full-time support.

Despite the best efforts of their two sons, the escalating care Terry and Holger require has quickly become too much for the family to handle alone.

What the Funds Will Support

Because of long waitlists and limited public support through Fraser Health, private home care is the family’s only option. Your donations will go directly toward:

• 24-hour home care for Terry and Holger until hospice or long-term care becomes available

• Final arrangements and funeral expenses for Terry, allowing her family to say goodbye with dignity

• Basic living expenses, such as groceries, utilities, and household bills

• Out-of-pocket medical costs not covered by insurance
