Our grandson is four years old. He is gentle, affectionate, and deeply sensitive - a little boy who loves music, soft blankets, and lining up his tiny toy cars in perfect rows. He is autistic and has an officially recognized disability, which means his world depends on safety, consistency, and gentle emotional care.
Right now, that safety is in danger - and the hardest part is explaining why, because it sounds impossible.
The part that sounds impossible
Over the past year, professionals who have evaluated our grandson - medical and mental-health providers - have documented signs of serious trauma connected to his court-ordered contact with his other parent. A child-protection agency investigated and assessed him to be at high risk of harm in that parent's care.
Here is what most people don't realize: a finding of risk does not mean the government steps in to protect the child.
Almost everyone assumes that if a child-protection agency decides a child is in danger, someone with authority makes it stop. We found out that this is not how the system works.. An agency can investigate, document harm, and conclude a child is at serious risk - and still decline to carry the case forward. When that happens, the entire responsibility to protect the child falls on the protecting parent, who must walk into court and prove the danger all over again - without the agency's resources, and often against someone who has their own attorney.
Protection is not automatic. It has to be fought for, privately, at enormous cost. That is exactly where our family is now.
Our grandson's mother followed every rule the system asked of her. She reported her concerns, complied with every investigation, followed every procedure, and brought documentation to every hearing. Instead of being supported, she has been doubted and treated as the problem simply for speaking up - while the situation for our little boy did not improve.
Why we need your help now
A critical hearing is coming up in the next few weeks, and it could shape our grandson's safety for years to come. Without experienced legal representation and expert testimony, the evidence gathered by professionals - and the agency's own risk assessment - may never be fully heard. We cannot walk into this hearing alone.
What your donation pays for
A specialized family-law / child-safety attorney: $15,000–$20,000
A forensic expert to testify in court: ~$6,000
Additional expert and professional witnesses: $300 each × 4–5 = $1,200–$1,500
Our family has already spent more than $80,000 trying to keep this child safe. We have drained our savings, taken loans, and exhausted every personal resource. We simply cannot finish this fight without help.
When you give, you are:
- protecting a disabled child who cannot protect himself,
- standing with a parent who is being doubted for trying to keep her child safe,
- making sure expert voices actually reach the courtroom,
- and refusing to let a vulnerable child fall through the gap between "at risk" and "protected."
Even a small gift moves us closer. And please share this - many people have no idea this gap exists until they see it happening to a real child.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for caring, for helping, and for standing with us. Your compassion can truly change the course of a child's life - and help protect other children facing the same injustice.
With gratitude,
Oktya
