For more than a decade, Salve Monos Playa Hermosa has worked to protect the monkeys and wildlife of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

We are a small, community-based conservation group responding daily to monkey electrocutions, injuries, habitat loss, and wildlife emergencies across Playa Hermosa, Coco, Ocotal, Nacascol, Sardinal, Panamá, Artola, Nuevo Colón and surrounding areas.

Every day, monkeys risk their lives crossing roads and power lines as development continues to fragment the forests they once freely moved through.

And yet — they continue trying to survive.

Through years of dedicated work, Salve Monos Playa Hermosa has:

Installed and maintained wildlife bridges

⚡ Helped reduce electrocution risks

Protected and restored wildlife corridors

Responded to injured and orphaned wildlife

Conducted long-term howler monkey population studies in Playa Hermosa

Today, Playa Hermosa alone has approximately 150 monkey bridges helping wildlife move safely through fragmented habitat.

But this work is expensive — and urgent.

Unlike many organizations, Salve Monos Playa Hermosa receives no government funding. Everything we do is made possible through volunteers, local support, and donations from people who care deeply about Costa Rica’s wildlife.

Recent studies show that Playa Hermosa’s howler monkey population has declined by approximately 25% in recent years, with electrocution remaining one of the leading causes of death.

Without continued action, more monkeys will be lost.
