Campaign for battling cancer of Prof. Pyakurel

We (together with Dr. Sudarshan Tiwari, and Prof. Dr. Tanka Nath Dhamala) are raising a fund to help Prof. Pyakurel, who is battling cancer. I am Santosh Gnawali, a lecturer at Tribhuvan University in Nepal and a PhD candidate at RPTU, Germany. Dr. Tiwari is a mathematician, and research scientist at Industrial Mathematics, RPTU, Germany. Prof. Dhamala is the Professor and Head of the Central Department of Mathematics at Tribhuvan University, Nepal. We assure you that all the funds raised in this campaign will be transferred to her.  धेरै सम्भावना बोकेका युवा देशमा केही हुन्न भनेर विदेशिँदा मलाई भने देशमा नै केही गर्न मन लागेको थियो ।

म युवापुस्ताका लागि एउटा सन्देश छोड्न चाहन्थेँ कि नेपालमा पनि धेरै सम्भावना छन् र झन् बढी नै छन् । हामीले धेरै गर्नु छ । आफ्नो उद्देश्य पुरा गर्न मैँले निकै सङ्घर्ष गरेँ र जस्तो सुकै अपठ्यारा परिस्थितिसँग पनि नडराई अघि बढिरहेँ ।

आठ वर्ष पूरा हुँदा एक कक्षामा भर्ना भएकी मैले २९ वर्षकी हुँदा गणित विषयमा मास्टर्स डिग्री गरेँ । ३१ वर्षमा उप-प्राध्यापक, ३९ वर्षमा सह-प्राध्यापक र ४१ वर्षमा नेपालमा नै गणित विषयकी कान्छी प्राध्यापक भएँ । यी सबै खुल्ला प्रतिस्पर्धाका प्राप्ति थिए । ३५ वर्षमा मैँले त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयबाट नै गणित विषयमा पिएचडी सकेँ ।

तर आफ्नो अनुसन्धानमार्फत नेपाललाई, त्रिविलाई संसारमा चिनाउने मेरो सपना, म जस्तै युवालाई नेपालबाट नै अनुसन्धान गरेर अगाडि बढ्न प्रोत्साहन गर्ने मेरो सपनामा अलिकति बादल लगाउँदै क्यान्सर भयो मलाई ।

हुनत मैले मेरो जीवनको सङ्घर्षमा क्यान्सरभन्दा पनि जटिल समस्याहरुसँग लडेकी छु । यो त मेरो शरीरभित्र उब्जिएको हो र यसलाई म सजिलै परास्त गरिहाल्छु भनेर कति पनि डराइन ।

सात वर्षदेखि निरन्तर लडिरहेकी छु । मैले अनुसन्धान गर्न छोडेँ भने, काम गर्न छोडेँ भने क्यान्सरले मलाई झन् सताउँछ भन्ने लाग्थ्यो । त्यसैले मेरो शरीरलाई पो क्यान्सर भएको छ, मलाई त भएको छैन भन्दै घाइते शरीरलाई फकाउँदै, माया गर्दै अनुसन्धानको काम गरि नै रहेँ !

यो यात्रा सजिलो छँदै थिएन, मेरो शरीरसँगै मलाई माया गर्ने धेरैको साथले आजसम्म सफल भएकी छु । पटक-पटक अनुसन्धानको फेलोसिप दिएर अहिलेसम्म सहयोग गरिदिने जर्मनीको हुम्बोल्डट फाउन्डेसन निकै प्रिय सहयात्री बन्यो जसबाट जर्मनीमा र नेपालमा गरेर साढे चार करोड नेपाली रुपियाँभन्दा बढीको उपचार गर्न सकेँ ।

म सिन्धुपाल्चोक जिल्लाको विकट गाउँ कालिकाकी एउटा किसान परिवारकी छोरी हुँ । मेरो सरकारी तलबले खान र कोठा भाडा तिर्न राम्रैसँग पुग्छ । तर मेरो उपचारको लागि पैसा थिएन ।

तर मेरो अनुसन्धानको कारण अहिलेसम्म अरूलाई खासै भार नपारी उपचार पनि सम्भव बनाएँ । मलाई क्यान्सर भएपछि साथीभाइ, परिवार, अफिस, परिवार सबैतिरका सहयोगी मनले सहयोगका लागि अनुरोध गर्नुपर्छ भनिरहनु भयो । तर मैँले आफूले गर्न सकुन्जेल, धान्न सकुन्जेल म आफैँ गर्छु भनेर पर्खन अनुरोध गरिरहेँ ।

आफूले काम गरेर, आफ्नै पौरखमा आफ्नो उपचार गर्नु मेरो लागि छुट्टै सुन्तुष्टि थियो, त्यसबाट छुट्टै उर्जा आउँथ्यो, मलाई सक्रिय बनाउँथ्यो र क्यान्सरसँग लड्न ठूलो हिम्मत थियो त्यो जसका कारणा आजसम्म म सफल पनि भएँ ।

तर अब स्तन, डिम्बाशय, कलेजो हुँदै फोक्सोमा पनि प्रभाव बढाउन थाल्यो क्यान्सरले ! किमोथेरापीलाई नटेर्ने भयो । डाक्टरका अनुसार अब एउटै मात्र उपाय इम्युनोथेरापी उपचार रहेको छ जुन प्रत्येक तीन हप्तामा लगाउनु पर्छ तर असाध्य महँगो, सोच्न पनि नसकिने, एक साइकलको चार लाख रूपियाँ पर्ने रहेछ ।

मसँग यतिबेला कुनै फेलोसिप हुन्थ्यो भने त्यो पनि असम्भव थिएन तर अहिले मसँग त्यो किन्न सक्ने कुनै हैसियत छैन ।

यस अवस्थामा म यस्तो दोबाटोमा छु एउटामा लाग्दा अब क्यान्सरको अगाडि घुँडा टेक्नुपर्ने हुन्छ । अर्को बाटो क्यान्सरलाई घुँडा टेकाउने हुन्छ त्यसका लागि मैले सहयोगी मनहरुलाई गुहार्नु पर्ने हुन्छ ।

यो छ वर्षको यात्रामा कयौँ पटक आँखा अगाडि मृत्युलाई महसुस गरेकी म तपाइँहरूको सानो सहयोग भए पनि आफ्नो उद्देश्य सम्झेर, मलाई हेरिरहेका, पछ्याइरहेका युवापुस्ताका लागि म हिम्मत बन्नुपर्छ भन्दै सोच्दै जुरुक्क उठ्थेँ ।

मेरो दश वर्षदेखिको एउटा सपना काठमाडौँको ट्राफिक जामलाई वैज्ञानिक व्यवस्थापन गर्ने जुन अनुसन्धानको क्षेत्र हो । यसका लागि कयौँ युवा अनुसन्धानकर्तालाई उर्जा दिनु छ र साँच्चै गरेर देखाउनु छ मैले ।

मेरो जीवनको यो सायद अन्तिम उद्देश्य पनि हो । यो नहेरी म कसरी हारौँ भन्दै मैँले आफूलाई हार्न दिइनँ । कतिपटक त डाक्टरले माया मारिसक्दा पनि म आत्तिन्नथेँ सब ठिक हुन्छ भन्दै उठ्थेँ ।

मैले नेपालका लागि, गणितका लागि, केही गरौँ भन्ने सम्पूर्ण युवा पुस्ताका लागि अझै धेरै गर्नुछ । सम्पूर्ण क्यान्सर रोगीका लागि अझै हिम्मत बन्नु छ ।

तर यतिबेला चाहिँ अलि कमजोर महसुस गरेकी छु, उपचार त छ अगाडि । त्यसले राम्रो गर्छ भन्ने विश्वास पनि छ तर फेरि पनि त्यो धान्ने पैसा छैन ।

त्यसैले अलि निराश भएकी छु र यो लामो क्यान्सर यात्रामा नै पहिलो पटक मभित्रको थोरै उर्जा कमजोर भएको छ । ४२ वर्षको उमेरमा, काम काम गर्ने मुख्य समयमा नै हारेर जीवन छोड्नु पर्ने त होइन भनेर अलकति डर पनि लाग्न थालेको छ ।

उपचार नै नभएको भए त मलाई कुनै असन्तुष्टि हुने थिएन किनकि मैले गर्ने धेरै काम गरेको छु र सन्तुष्ट पनि छु जे गर्न सकेँ त्यसमा !

केही उपाय नलागे पछि हाँसी-हाँसी मृत्युलाई स्वीकार्नुको के नै विकल्प हुन्छ र ! मलाई कति पनि गुनासो हुने थिएन, म हाँसेर नै मर्ने थिएँ र मेरो मृत्युमा कसैलाई एक थोपा आँसु खसाल्न दिने थिइनँ किनकि मैँले एउटा सफल जीवन बाँचिसकेकी छु ।

उपचार हुँदा-हुँदै पैसाको अभावमा जीवन छोड्नु पर्दा चाहिँ कतै नेपालमा नै बसेर केही गरेर देखाउँछु भन्नु नै गल्ती थियो कि भन्ने पनि लागेको छ । म यो छ वर्षको यात्रामा हरेक कठिन परिस्थितिमा लड्दै काम गरिरहनुको उद्देश्य यो पनि थियो कि मेरो देशको युवा पुस्तामा निराशापूर्ण सन्देश दिन चाहन्न थिएँ म ।

कम्तीमा भुटान अथवा श्रीलङ्कामा जस्तो गतिलो इन्सुरेन्स पोलिसि सरकारको भइदिएको भए आज मेरो यो दिन आउने थिएन न म नेपालमा नै बस्नु गलत थियो कि भनेर सोच्न थाल्थेँ ।

तर जे भए पनि मेरो मातृभूमि मेरा लागि महान् छ । नेपाली र नेपाललाई माया गर्ने मनहरूबाट म फेरि एक पटक क्यान्सरसँग सामना गर्न तपाइँहरूसँग गुहार माग्दैछु ।

सकेको सहयोग गरिदिन नेपाल सरकार, सङ्घ संस्था र व्यक्तिसगँ याचना गर्दछु । गुनको बदला देशमा नै मैले सकेको काम गरेर गणित अनुसन्धानको व्यावहारिक प्रयोगको एउटा गोरेटो मात्र कोरेर भए पनि तिर्नेछु ।

Appeal to Save the Life of Young Professor

As the world is celebrating International Women’s Day, Prof. Dr. Urmila Pyakurel has released a public appeal to save her life. She is struggling with breast, ovarian, stomach, liver and lung cancer for last 6 years. She has been very brave, confident and positive during her treatment. Her appeal is to save the life by donating as per the capability, since the treatment cost is very expensive and she is not been able to manage the fund. It costs about 400 thousands Nepali rupees per dose in every three weeks.

Prof. Pyakurel said “it is very difficult me to meet the expenses as I have no any fellowship for the research activities”. Even though she did not intend to request for the support earlier, but the very costly new treatment plan compelled her to appeal publicly. She has so far been bearing the cost of treatment through her research activities. As a Humboldtian, her research activities have been supported with the fellowships from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She belongs to a typical farmer’s family of Kalika village of Sindhupalchowk and has spent more than 450 million of Nepali rupees during her treatment in Nepal and Germany.

Her research is focused on solving the growing traffic problem in Nepal through the practical application of mathematics. As a Humboldtian, her research activities have been supported with the fellowships from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. She had completed her PhD at the age of 35 and last year, at the age of 41, she became the youngest professor in Central Department of Mathematics, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. She also has been writing literature under the name of Madhushree.

As suggested by Prof. Dr. Rajendra Baral at Norvic Hospital, Kathmandu, Nepal, she must start the Immunotherapy as an important option. Her treatment with Dr. Baral is going on since last 3 years. Till date, she has taken 64 doses of Chemotherapy and Radio therapy. The Immunotherapy should be taken at least for a year and further as per the effectiveness of the treatment plan.

According to Prof. Dr. Tanka Nath Dhamala, Head at Central Department of Mathematics, Prof. Pyakurel is not only an outstanding researcher and young scientist, she is very successful in collaborating with international scientific community. She is always eager and curious to solve real-world mathematical problems. It is extremely interesting and amazing that her major scientific contributions are published in high impact journals parallelly fighting with cancer. She is always actively involved in teaching and research activities. Currently, she is supervising 6 PhD research scholars and some graduate students. Prof. Dhamala, who is also her PhD supervisor, appealed to kindly support for her treatment.

According to her brother Mr. Rajendra Pyakurel, the success of his sister in the field of education is the matter of pride not only in the family but also for the country. As she is from the middle income family and being unable to bear the cost of treatment, he also requested the community to support her financially.
