Hello! My name is Min Kee Kim and I'm a student filmmaker writing and directing an honors thesis film titled "But First, Today." Inspired by the likes of filmmakers Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Jim Jarmusch, and Chloe Zhao, the project aims to explore the aesthetic framework of contemporary "slow cinema" and "quotidian films," exploring the intricacies and colors of labor and early adulthood in the 21st century:
Daisy is simultaneously crushed and fulfilled by her life of routine and a job at a flower shop. One day, she stumbles upon an open audition for a community theater production of Tennessee William's Summer and Smoke. In between loads of laundry and shifts at her work, she obsesses over the monologue that could change her life for the better...
I am completing this honors thesis with the guidance of Professor Nicole Staroseilski and Professor Delores McElroy at UC Berkeley. However, this film is entirely self-funded/produced independently from the school. All proceeds will go into equipment rentals, locations, and post production!
There will be a free screening for family, friends and donors sometime mid May!
