I am a Type 1 Diabetic and a stay-at-home mother to three young children, ages 5, 4, and 3. Recently, while home alone with them as my husband was at work, I experienced a severe low blood sugar episode that resulted in a seizure.
I had no awareness of what was happening until I regained consciousness. When I asked my daughter what had happened, she told me, “Mommy was crying and shaking and then sleeping in the mud room.” Hearing her describe that moment from her perspective was heartbreaking. It was then that I fully understood the seriousness of what had occurred — and that something needs to change.
That experience was frightening, not only for me but for my children. It has led me to pursue the life-changing support of a Diabetic Alert Dog. These highly trained service dogs are able to detect blood sugar changes through scent, often before devices or symptoms alert me. In situations where technology fails or blood sugar drops rapidly, a Diabetic Alert Dog can provide an early warning — giving me precious time to treat the low and prevent a medical emergency such as another seizure.
My goal is simple: to do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.
A Diabetic Alert Dog would not only provide an added layer of safety, but also peace of mind for my entire family. It would mean greater security while caring for my children, increased independence, and a significantly improved quality of life.
These dogs are truly extraordinary. If a Diabetic Alert Dog saves my life even once, the value is immeasurable.
Thank you sincerely for your time, consideration, and support. It means more than you know.
