Over a decade ago, Prospect Heights resident Jeff Beler had a vision: to transform a forgotten corner of Brooklyn into a vibrant space for creativity and community.
On Underhill Avenue stood the burned-out shell of a laundromat — a remnant of a fire over 20 years ago. Seeing potential where others saw decay, Jeff tracked down the property owner, secured permission, and partnered with curator Frankie Velez to assemble a team of artists. Together, they created the first murals, inspired by a zodiac theme.
To launch the project, Jeff collaborated with Love Heals, a NYC nonprofit focused on HIV education among Black and Latino youth. The event was a success — what was once a neglected corner became a beacon of color, energy, and expression.
Over the past 10 years, Underhill Walls has grown into a global destination for street art lovers. Artists from around the world have contributed to the 17 rotating panels, refreshed every six months. The project has inspired other initiatives, including Washington Walls, Bergen Street Walls, and five Brooklyn public school murals.
After years of exposure to the elements, the original wooden panels are warped and need a full restoration to keep this cultural landmark alive. Located just blocks from the Brooklyn Museum, the library, and Grand Army Plaza, Underhill Walls has become an open-air gallery that inspires thousands every year.
