Help Preserve History with the Legacy Project Cemetery Group

We are looking for volunteers and are raising funds to support major restoration projects for the Legacy Project Cemetery Preservation Group. Any donation will help make an impact. I am an Army Veteran and founder of the Legacy Project Cemetery Preservation Group whose main goal is cemetery restoration, education, and honoring those that served before us.

We are looking to begin the restoration of the old cemetery at Friendship Church in Raytown GA beginning in December 2024. The old cemetery has not been up kept and if we don't do something soon, this history could be lost. There are also several veterans laid to rest there and their stones need attention as well.

We believe our ancestors deserve better and that we are responsible for telling the stories of our people, bridging the generational gaps that exist, and ensuring their resting places are taken care of. The Great Migration has had a huge impact on small rural churches and cemeteries as masses fled North for better opportunities and safety. Leaving many churches and cemeteries abandoned or without enough support to maintain the resting places of their ancestors and loved ones.

The main project of this year will begin in December as we plan on removing trees, leaves, cleaning headstones, removing debris from the site. We will need as many volunteers as possible to make this mission a reality and give honor to the resting place of those that came before us.

Funds will be used for cleaning materials, solutions, tree chipper rental, wooden crosses for unmarked graves, and a fence to keep trespassers (hunters) off of this sacred ground. No donation is too small as we look to recruit local high school students to be a part of this project and anyone that may have a connection to Raytown GA, Friendship Church, the old Piney Grove Church, or the greater community to include Warren, Wilkes, Taliaferro, McDuffie, and Hancock counties
