Sponsor 8th Grade Scholars on a Civil Rights Trip

Donation protected
Help preserve black history with the Heritage Tours as they take a trip through four states to teach our youth about the civil rights movement. We’ll be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in Atlanta, Georgia, Mohammad Ali in Louisville, Kentucky, George Washington Carver in Tuskegee, Alabama, and the Underground Railroad in Ripley, Ohio to name a few. This is a week-long trip from April 21, 2025 to April 26, 2025.

We need your help to make this happen! We have a goal to raise $3,000 by April 20, 2025 to cover this trip. The funds will be used to cover the registration fee, food, and accommodations. Your donations will make the trip possible for four Columbus City School students.

Here are excerpts from the essays that the students wrote to be selected for the trip:

Student #1

“I am drawn significantly to the Civil Rights Tour of the South as I’m eager to deepen my knowledge with what happened within this point in history and dedicate myself to becoming a more effective advocate for equality and justice. These locations are a reminder of the resilience and bravery of those who fought for civil rights. I was inspired by a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, “With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.”

Student #2

“This will be a life-changing experience that precisely coincides with my academic and personal goals. I strongly believe that this opportunity will enhance my understanding of African American History and inspire me to become a more effective advocate for social justice and cultural preservation.”

Student #3

“I should go to the civil rights tour of the south during spring break because I have been very involved and interested in learning more about civil rights for years.

I have created a few paintings dedicated to Black History Month like one for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Kamala Harris who was the first female U.S. Vice President. I have always been interested in black history which is why I got so invested in books like the Watsons Go to Birmingham and Cecil Sisters. It would be a life changing opportunity to see what I have read about.”

Student #4

“As an 8th grader, I see myself as an upcoming young adult. I want to go to college and study law. I work hard for good grades and play multiple sports to keep myself busy when I don't have afterschool programs. I am helpful, respectful, and thankful for all opportunities I receive. This opportunity would put me in a situation where I get support; it allows me to push myself to the max because there are others rooting for me and who believe in my abilities.”

Experiences that the kids will never forget:
  • Walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge where Bloody Sunday occurred
  • Reading the Lynching Records on the Steel Sculptures (Rated #1 as most memorable and life changing experience by past participants)
  • Visiting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s childhood home
This trip is life changing. Take note of what Proverbs 11:25 says, "A generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself. Invest in our future leaders and donate. Thank you for your support! May God bless your donation!
