Gerald Lee Parks Sr who most of the world knows as "Pops" was born on September 10th, 1951. He raised his children and grandchildren in Minnesota with love, support, and understanding. Pops life was not an easy one. From young, himself and his brothers grew up in poverty in St. Paul, MN upon graduation Pops joined the Navy along side his older brothers who also enlisted in the military. After being Honorably discharge pops met my mom and had my sister and I. Pops taught us more through his actions than any teacher we'd ever had. His words still ring in my ears every day before school "get smart." Pops only wanted us to have a better life then his.
As a kid Pops had strep throat. Due to waiting to long to have it treated it became scarlett fever. This set up the calcification in his heart valves that lead to multiple open heart surgeries and valve replacements. Later pops developed pancreatitis and had to have a part of his pancreas removed which, due to his previous medical conditions landed him in a coma for 2 months. Pops had spent the last 25 years of his life being poked and cut and stitched and stapled and put through every kind of pain one could think of.
In 2019 Pops was diagnosed with Cancer. At first this was in the lungs. And every new test showed new cancer. the liver then the lymphnodes, then the spine and bones. Due to covid and his fragile medical condition, chemo was not an option and pops fell very ill in January of 2021. Pops recieved his last diagnosis of Terminal Cancer on February 8th and passed away in his bed on March 7th.
I (Gerry Jr) am starting a gofundme in attempt to cover Pops funeral costs because he did not have any insurance. And military benifits only stretch so far.(not far at all)
But more than that im raising money because my dad deserves it. After a life of fighting in every meaning of the word.. Pops deserves to rest.
