Hi Everyone,
My name is Sam and I am raising money to help my amazing Dad get a new prosthetic leg while he also faces the most difficult struggle of his life, Stage 4 Lung Cancer. As many of you are aware, my dad has faced many hardships in his life. From losing my mom in 2002, to losing his own mom a year later, struggling to take care of two children on his own while also working long hard days as a fiberglasser, to then losing his left leg in 2013 which left him unable to work. Life hasn't dealt him a fair hand and although he never wants to burden anyone or ask for help, I'm hoping we can all work together to help him with these financial struggles.
When he was diagnosed in June 2025 with Stage 3 Lung Cancer, we tried our best to stay positive and hopeful while he began Chemotherapy treatments. Sadly, by the fall of 2025 we were informed that this particular treatment wasn't working and along with finding a blood clot in his left lung, they also found the cancer had now spread to his brain. After completing brain and lung radiation, the Doctor told us he was sorry, but the entire right lung was completely gone from the Cancer now and we would have to reevaluate everything again in February 2026. Due to the blood clot in his left lung, my dad will now have to take Lovenox needles for the rest of his life.
The radiation treatments had caused him to completely lose his appetite which resulted in significant weight loss. This not only made him unable to complete any further immunotherapy/chemotherapy treatments, but it also caused his prosthetic to become much too large for his body.
After taking him to the Miller Center to meet with the Palliative care and prosthetic team, they informed me that my sweet dad has spent years suffering with an incorrect sized prosthetic which was now significantly worse with the recent weight loss. (He is now down to 127 pounds)
I was told he was currently wearing a prosthetic leg that was 4 times to big for him which has significantly impacted his quality of life and was partially the reason he hasn't been able to walk in the past month. The price of a new prosthetic leg will be a significant amount of money and it will need to be designed differently than his first one due to his age and current health state all while also coping with the Lung and Brain Cancer. (we are currently awaiting quotation for the new prosthetic but for reference, the original leg cost 24,000)
Anyone who knows my dad knows he has a heart of gold. He is a very loving, compassionate, and hardworking man who would give you the shirt off his back. He never asks for anything and has always gone above and beyond for anyone who needed his help. It has been heartbreaking to watch him face so many hardships in his life and I'm hoping with the help of others, we could make this very difficult time a little easier for him.
Many of our close friends and family are aware that I do not live in Newfoundland where my dad is located. Since June, myself and my 3 year old daughter ( Poppy's girl ) have been traveling back and forth from Nova Scotia via ferry or plane to be here for him and drive him to all of his treatments/appointments. This in itself has been extremely challenging while also continuing to work a full time job. As much as we have hated to ask for help, we truly cannot get through this without the help and support of others. I'm praying we can raise enough money to cover the additional costs of his leg that insurance will not cover.
I just wanted to say thank you so much in advance to anyone who helps. It truly means the world to me and it will mean the world to my Dad.
