Update: It has been over four months now that Pongo has been in pain. We have checked and exhausted all monetary resources and options available to be able to take care of him. He barely puts any weight on his left hind leg now, and his right hind leg that had surgery originally is now bowing into the left, supporting all his weight. He is losing muscle mass quickly, and he picks up his leg up high off of the floor and cries in pain. His kidney values are also not within normal range now, which could be from muscle damage. Giving too much medication can affect his kidneys more. We are at a dire loss to fix our baby, and he is declining quickly. Please if there is any way you can help, it would mean everything to us.
Hello everyone, meet Pongo. He is a Doberman Lab mix, only 6 years old. I am looking for help in trying to get him a surgery that he desperately needs. He is a beloved Emotional Support Animal that helps care for my disabled mother. My mother has to take short walks to keep her strength, as she has many physical ailments. Pongo helps in many ways, helping physically mentally and emotionally. He is the love of her life.
Originally tearing his ACL on his right hind knee, he had to have surgery and a metal hinge put in to stabilize the knee and make sure he was able to walk. That was three years ago. Now, he is limping and not able to walk fully on his left hind leg, so I took him to the vet.
We had X-rays done, and it seems he has a full tear in his ACL on his left hind leg as well. He has been laying down and sleeping most often, and he's not able to walk very far, or jump and play. He is currently on pain medication to help make him more comfortable, but it is not working and not enough.
Unfortunately, pet insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. I have spoken to the doctor and he said a splint would not be beneficial, and he needs to get the surgery to be able to walk again. With the first surgery, he was able to run, jump, and play after many months of recuperation. Now that his other leg is affected, surgery will be needed again, and it is our only option. We hope to have the same results needed to give him every opportunity to live a happy life, and the vet says there is no reason why he can not have the same results as the first surgery because he is so young.
The surgery itself is approximately $5,500. X-rays have already cost about $600, and then more X-rays will be needed after the surgery. We then have the cost of his medications and further office visits. We are looking for a goal of $6,500 to afford vet bills and surgery costs.
Please, if there is any way you can help, support, or pass this message on, it would mean the world to us.
