My name is Polly, and I never imagined I’d be in this position. I’ve spent over 20 years as a First Responder, always ready to help others, no matter the hour. But now, I’m the one in need of help. After Social Security sent important paperwork to an old address—even though I had updated my information in person—they stopped my disability checks without warning. Because of this, I lost not only my SSDI but also my medical insurance and my housing. I’m now homeless in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, facing freezing temperatures with nowhere safe to go.
I live with multiple autoimmune diseases and a degenerative neck and spine, which require daily medications and regular specialist care. Without insurance, I can’t afford even one of my prescriptions. I’ve reapplied for my benefits, but the process can take months, and in the meantime, I’m struggling to survive. My biggest need is to get out of the cold and into a safe, stable place—ideally an extended stay hotel where I can cook my own food and be reunited with my ESA animals, who are currently staying with a friend. Donations will also help cover the cost of my essential prescriptions and medical care while I wait for my benefits to be restored.
I’m not someone who usually asks for help. I was a Lt. training officer and always the one to show up for others, but now I find myself needing support. If you feel moved to help me find a safe place to stay and cover my medical needs, I am deeply grateful. If you can’t, I understand, and I wish blessings and safety for everyone facing hard times. Thank you for reading my story.
