Moises Kaufman recently said “… I think it’s an opportunity for us to think twice about the art we want to make. The first thing that totalitarian regimes always do is go against artists… because they know how powerful we are. And WE have to know how powerful we are because we have the stage.” Theatre is all about creating your own magic, your own opportunities, and your own community. There are enough reasons to doubt ourselves as artists and get stuck in a spiral questioning why we decided to do this for a living, especially considering the world around us.

The idea for Pocket Theatre Company came about when we were discussing how we felt lost as artists and we wanted to create an opportunity for ourselves and the other artists we knew to be excited about their art again. The goal of our theatre company is to create a space for smaller artists to reignite the passion that can occasionally get lost in the hustle of the city.

For our first production, we’ll be performing Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties by Jen Silverman. The reason we picked this play? Watch the news. In all seriousness, it was important to us to do a play that allowed queer people to express their anger, love, and loneliness in an intimate and profound way. We wanted a recognizable play that would get people in the door and show them what Pocket is all about.

It would mean the world to us if you would consider donating to our first production so we can continue our work beyond this three show event! Beyond this show, we are going to host writers workshops, do staged readings of the works created in those workshops, produce new plays created by artists who need a space to see their work up on its feet, and give a home to theatre artists just looking to find joy in their craft again. With the cancellation of so much art funding in the US right now, we want to give people a reason to stick with what they love, with what their good at, and ensure them that their voice matters no matter how small! All of our funds go directly back to the artists we work with!
