Haus Yuriyal is a collective of artists based in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Established in 2013, the collective has featured in exhibitions at the University of Queensland Art Museum (2019), the 22nd Biennale of Sydney (2020) and most recently at the Milani Gallery, Brisbane (2023).
Haus Yuriyal will feature in the upcoming 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) at the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art.
The APT exhibition runs from 30 November 2024 to 27 April 2025.
Haus Yuriyal is seeking your assistance to bring 3 of the artists from the collective to Brisbane to participate in the opening weekend program. The artists are Alison Wel, Ai Yopa and Digine Dickson.
Over the opening weekend, the Haus Yuriyal artists will activate their haus toktok with a range of performances and talks for the APT's local, national and international audiences.
Alison Wel is from the Yuri tribe in Simbu Province. She works with textiles to create bilum works, innovating the techniques she learnt as a young child to create large scale textiles that speak of her Yuri heritage.
Ai Yopa is from the Yuri tribe in Simbu Province. Ai is a painter and installation artist who uses painting, sculpture, textiles and performance in a variety of applications, to create contemporary expressions of his Yuri culture.
Digine Dickson is also from the Yuri tribe in Simbu Province. Digine is a photographer and sculptor interested in documenting contemporary expressions of his Yuri culture.
With your support, we will:
- purchase airfares for the 3 artists
- pay for their visas and associated costs
- assist them with accommodation costs while in Brisbane
- assist them with a modest stipend while in Brisbane
