Help Pipspook and Oki Recover from Mountain Lion Attack
Donation protected
Hi all! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read this.
Yesterday, 10/16/2024, my dog Pipspook, and my SIL's service dog, were attacked by a wild animal. Vets and local hunters suspect a mountain lion. We are incredibly lucky and grateful that both dogs made it out alive. Pipspook has a pierced trachea, some punctures and lacerations around his neck. He also has unknown wounds around his body that vets can't fully assess yet due to him not being stable enough to sedate. Oki, the service dog, thankfully made it out with some cuts and scratches, but not nearly the damage Pipspook has. So far, we've spent nearly $1k on medical bills, medications, and wet food for him to eat, as he has a hole in his throat which limits him.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, as recently, my father passed away and we are all still grieving his loss. The next paragraph, we will go more into detail on what our vets and local hunters suspected.
Yesterday started off as any other day. All 4 dogs went out for their morning potty and playtime before breakfast. We brought my SIL's medical alert SD in and left Pipspook, Oki (the other SD), and Koko (a pet dog). We were loosely supervising and had windows open so we could watch and hear them while we knocked out morning responsibilities. When we went to bring the dogs in for their breakfast, Oki came running in beat up, Koko seemed fine, and we could not find Pipspook. We thought maybe he escaped or a fight happened, but that didn't make sense due to Oki's injuries and we didn't hear or see anything! Upon further investigation, we found Pipspook scared, bleeding, having trouble breathing, and hiding under our boat trailer. After getting him out, which was quite the task, he was limping and dashed to get inside. We immediately rushed him to the vet. We attached images of when we first found him. TRIGGER WARNING: they're bloody. After a few hours of intense stress, uncertainty, and big feelings, we got the call from the vet. Pierced trachea, many wounds, and more unknown. All they could tell us was that these were not dog bites, but more aligned with mountain lion bites. They told us that he was EXTREMELY lucky to be alive, and lucky Oki was there to fend off the animal. We were also lucky Oki escaped the situation as okay as he did. We brought him home with many medications and instructions to bring him in again tomorrow morning, 10/17/2024, for more monitoring. That's where we are currently at. Pipspook isn't out of the woods yet, but we are grateful he and Oki had each other's back. The two of them reunited once Pip was home, and they didn't want to leave each other's side. We cannot express how grateful we are that they're okay and alive. Someone or something was definitely watching out for them.
