Meet Piper
Piper is a loving, playful mixed-breed dog born in January 2020. This friendly girl absolutely loves running and playing with other dogs. She is incredibly affectionate and happiest when she is close to her person.
When Piper’s previous family realized they could not give her the level of exercise and activity she needed because of their young children and an older dog with mobility issues, they made the responsible decision to find her a home better suited to her energetic nature.
That is when Piper’s current guardian stepped in. Understanding that this anxious, high-energy pup needed patience, structure, and love, they committed to giving Piper the stability she deserved. Together, they have been working to manage her anxiety, especially during thunderstorms and fireworks, and to channel her energy through play and exercise.
Just as they were finding their rhythm, Piper was diagnosed with a torn CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) and torn meniscus, painful injuries that required immediate surgery.
The Medical Challenge
Piper underwent a complex three-hour surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital to repair both the torn ligament and meniscus. The procedure was successful, but her recovery will take time and care.
She now faces:
- An eight-week recovery period with limited activity
- Follow-up blood work and X-rays in six weeks
- Daily pain and liver-support medications
- Possible physical therapy depending on progress
- A potential second surgery on her other leg, since these injuries often occur in pairs
Medical Expenses
- Initial behavioral care $1,500
- CCL/Meniscus surgery and hospitalization $5,518
- Follow-up visit (blood work and X-rays) $500–$600
- Ongoing medications and supplements TBD
- Total Estimated Need $7,500
Why Joyful Pets Is Supporting This Campaign
At Joyful Pets, our commitment does not end when an adoption is finalized. We believe in standing by our adopters through life’s unexpected challenges, because keeping pets in loving homes is at the heart of our mission.
When Piper’s guardian reached out about her emergency surgery, we knew we wanted to help. We are connecting this family with grants, resources, and our caring community to ease the financial strain of her care.
By helping Piper’s guardian keep her, we are also keeping another dog out of the shelter system and honoring the commitment that was made when they opened their heart and home to a dog in need.
A Note from Piper’s Guardian
“It’s like watching a child in pain. I can’t rest knowing she’s hurting. Since adopting Piper, I’ve felt completely responsible for her well-being. She’s already overcome so much anxiety and confusion from being rehomed, and now she deserves the chance to heal and feel safe again. I’m doing everything I can, but I need help covering her medical costs. Any support, no matter how small, would mean the world to both of us. Thank you for taking the time to read Piper’s story.”
From Joyful Pets
“Piper’s pet parent has shown extraordinary dedication, taking on unexpected behavioral and medical challenges without hesitation. They helped another family who could not keep Piper, prevented a shelter surrender, and now advocate tirelessly for her recovery. This is exactly the kind of adopter we want to support. Together, we can ensure Piper stays where she belongs, with the person who loves her most.”
