Help Fund Piper's Study Abroad in Japan This Summer

Hi, I'm Piper Bryman, a student-athlete passionate about psychology and anthropology. Earlier this year, I applied to a study abroad program in Tokyo, Japan focused on Language & Culture and got accepted. Please help fund my month-long journey of connecting with my heritage, immersing myself in a new culture, and taking this opportunity to grow my independence!

I've always desired to connect with my Japanese heritage and explore different cultures. While I’m half Japanese and half Eastern European Jewish, I feel disconnected from my Japanese roots, having grown up without Japanese language or traditions at home. Despite practicing Karate and learning Japanese in high school, I am excited to immerse myself in Japanese culture by traveling to Japan, as I believe it will help me feel more connected to my identity.

Studying abroad also aligns with my passion for anthropology. I believe understanding human behavior is essential for making meaningful change in the world. Experiencing different cultures firsthand will give me valuable perspectives. I want to explore beyond the American ideals I’m accustomed to and develop a more nuanced understanding of global diversity. In a time when political and cultural divisions are so pronounced in the U.S., I believe that living abroad, especially in a country tied to my heritage, will give me insights into how we can bridge these divides.

Additionally, studying abroad offers an opportunity to develop my independence. Though I’ve been preparing for the future by reading and receiving guidance from my family, living on my own is still an intimidating concept. This study abroad program will allow me to build independence in a safe environment, and this experience will prepare me for my future ambitions. If I can thrive in a foreign country, I’m confident I’ll succeed in any future endeavors, including college or a future career framed on global diversity.
