In the human experience, we’re told to expect loss. What no one prepares you for is what it feels like when the losses don’t stop coming.

Earlier this year, I lost everything I owned. And I know you might wonder what that really means. I was one of the victims of the Eaton Canyon fire. On January 7th, everything I owned as an adult woman was engulfed in flames. Clothes, memories, the small things I’d held onto over the years.

The only life that was spared was my cat’s. She became my reason to keep going, the one being who survived with me and carried me through the aftermath. And now I’m fighting to keep Pi alive.

It feels like all I’ve done this year is ask for help. After the fire, after losing everything, I never imagined I’d be here again. But what I’ve come to understand is that my community has shown up for me in ways I will never forget. I’ve been held, supported, and reminded that I’m not alone. So I’m asking again, because sometimes surviving means asking for and letting people help you.
