I'll try to keep this short and sweet:
In 2009 I gave myself my first silly haircut. And then my friends let me give them silly haircuts. And then the haircuts started getting pretty good.
Since then, I've been serving queer and trans communities freelancing in DC, New York, Philly, and LA. I've organized montly queer haircut parties and opened up a free haircut shop at Autostraddle's A-Camp.
It's hard to tell you how overwhelmingly lucky I feel to be trusted by friends, strangers (who are no longer strangers), and community members alike to help them realize their vision, to affirm their gender, to feel like themselves, to try something new, or to just get the hair off the back of their neck for the summer.
So I'm finally going pro. To do that I'll be starting at Empire Beauty School in October to train for the NYS licensing exam next fall. I'll also be apprenticing once a week in Manhattan, something I'm especially looking forward to. I'll be in night school four nights a week while balancing my apprenticeship and continuing to freelance on a sliding scale. Helping me through school would allow me to to focus full-time on cutting hair rather than juggling it with another job or two.
The $25,000 I'm asking for will cover tuition, supplement rent, purchase supplies for skills not included in the curriculum, pay down undergrad debt from 2010, and attend to other survival needs.
I'm looking forward to seeing where I can go from here - and where I can go with all of you. Thank you so much for your help in making this possible.
If you'd like to book a cut, I'd be so happy to see you. You can see my work and DM me on Twitter or Instagram at @kcdanger. If you'd prefer to donate through Venmo or Ca$happ, you can find me under @kcdanger as well. Thanks again.
