Help Me Volunteer in a Children’s Hospital in Tanzania – July 2026
Hello, my name is Phoebe Starr, and I’m a second-year Paediatric Nursing student at Brighton University with a dream of helping children facing some of the most challenging circumstances and making a real difference in their lives.
In July 2026, I’ve been given the incredible opportunity to travel to Tanzania for a 3-week international placement, where I will be volunteering in a children’s hospital.
So far in my nursing degree, I have completed a variety of placements that have broadened my clinical knowledge and practical skills. These include working with a health visiting team, placements at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, community nursing for children with complex needs, and time in the Special Baby Care Unit at Conquest Hospital.
During my placement in Tanzania, I will have the opportunity not only to work in a children’s ward but also in the neonatal unit. This will be an incredible learning experience that will help shape me into the nurse I aspire to be.
However, this opportunity is about much more than gaining experience.
In Tanzania, I will be working hands-on with children facing heartbreaking realities such as malaria, HIV, life-limiting illnesses, injuries, and the impacts of poverty and famine. I’ll also gain invaluable safeguarding experience, learning how to protect vulnerable children living in circumstances very different from our own.
These children deserve compassion, care, and support — and I want to be there to help provide it.
But I can’t do it alone.
I’m hoping to raise £1,500 to help cover the cost of my flights. Every single pound will go directly toward getting me to Tanzania so I can volunteer and support the children who need it most.
As someone who lives with ADHD and has experienced the challenges of being neurodivergent, this opportunity means even more to me. I never imagined I would have the chance to travel across the world, step outside my comfort zone, and dedicate myself to something so meaningful.
During the week I will be volunteering full-time in the hospital, providing support wherever it’s needed most. At weekends, I’ll have the chance to immerse myself in Tanzanian culture, learn from the community, and even see African wildlife — something I’ve dreamed of for years.
Experiencing healthcare in a developing country will open my eyes to different ways of nursing and help shape the type of nurse I hope to become: compassionate, resilient, and dedicated to advocating for children’s health wherever they are in the world.
If you believe in helping children, in kindness, and in supporting people who are striving to make a difference, I would be so grateful for your support.
No donation is too small. Every contribution, share, or kind word helps bring me closer to this life-changing opportunity.
Thank you for helping me turn this dream into reality — not just for me, but for the children I hope to care for.
With love and gratitude,
Phoebe
