Friends, family, and kind internet strangers:
While we were out of town on a family trip at the beginning of March, our diabetic cat Phobos had a major blood glucose event leading to ketoacidosis. While we were incredibly lucky that our cat sitter caught on to the signs and got her to the ER as fast as possible (even half a day later and we could have lost her), our poor girl has been in the ICU for over a week and half and remains there today.
She's out of the immediate danger zone, but the vets there are still trying to figure out why she isn't absorbing insulin properly. Without their continued care, she will like be back in a similar situation within weeks, if not days.
We are caught in the difficult position where she needs this intensive care in order to eventually come home, but the cost of that care has rapidly mounted out of our reach. The latest quote from the ER is already well beyond our means.
All of this has been compounded by the fact that, on that same trip, Jeremy severely sprained his ankle (and possibly tore his achilles), leaving him unable to do his usual work coaching gymnastics.
It's never easy to ask for help, but we've hit the point where we don't know what else to do. All we want is to bring our sweet girl home.
