Help Phil Klein adjust to life as an amputee
Donation protected
For those who don’t know Phil, thank-you for taking the time to read his story. Phil is a loving husband to Judy, father to four children and has 9 grandchildren.
Phil has a condition called Neurofibromatosis which he has lived with for over 40 years. This causes many small lumps on his skin. Five years ago Phil noticed that one of these lumps on his big toe was growing larger. After getting it checked he found out that the lump had become cancerous and as a result his toe was amputated. Since then Phil has had 6 peripheral nerve sheath tumours, which were related to his condition and were basically malignant tumours growing along the nerve in his right leg. After a number of surgeries to remove them (and some complications following), the largest and most recent tumour left him unable to walk more than a few steps at a time, and has resulted in a high amputation of his leg.
Phil is currently 600km from his home in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, in a Perth hospital recovering from the amputation surgery and learning how to live with one leg. He will soon be moved to a rehabilitation hospital for an unknown period of time.
Phil is facing some major lifestyle changes in the coming months. Among them is the need for a motorised mobility aid and a reliable, modified car so he can still drive himself around when he is able to return to work.
Judy has been by Phil’s side for every medical appointment and surgery. The many trips to Perth for his treatment have meant time away from her job and has quickly consumed her accumulated leave. Sadly she may not be able to stay in Perth with Phil for the duration of his recovery, and will have to travel to visit him as she is able to.
Throughout it all, I have never heard Phil complain or feel sorry for himself. He and Judy are two of the kindest and most generous people I know.
The intention of this fundraiser is to help support this amazing couple as they navigate this journey as an amputee. Any donations will be deeply appreciated and will help relieve the financial pressure of the many extra expenses this cancer has added to their lives.
