In the early hours of December 29, our neighbor and dear friend, Peter Germishuizen, experienced a tragic house fire that destroyed his home and all of its contents. Peter is currently in the hospital recovering from minor injuries due to the fire. We are so thankful he survived, but his life has been turned upside down. Tragically, a close friend who was staying with Peter for the holidays did not survive the fire.

Peter is 87 years old, originally from South Africa, and has spent his life building friendships and family wherever he goes. If you’ve ever met Peter, you know his kindness, his stories, and his ability to make you feel like you belong.

This year has already been unbearably hard for Peter. He lost his beloved wife, Faith, just months ago. Faith was a gifted artist whose work touched so many lives. Now, Peter faces the unimaginable—grieving his wife while losing his home and everything in it.

Peter needs our help. He will need funds for housing, essentials, and professional support to get through this season. If you can give, please do. Every dollar will help him rebuild and remind him that he is not alone.

December 31 Update:

Peter has been released from the hospital and is beginning the difficult process of putting his life back together. He is working through the overwhelming administrative details—recovering what can be salvaged from the home, replacing essential items, and filing reports and claims. It’s hard to fathom losing everything; we often take for granted the simplicity of having our basic needs met. When you consider having to replace every single item in your life, even the smallest things become a challenge.

Peter is deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from neighbors and the community. Thanks to your generosity, he has a warm place to stay, food to eat, clothes, shoes, and resources to move forward. He is overwhelmed but encouraged by the kindness shown during this unimaginable time. Thank you for continuing to support him as he navigates this journey.

January 10 Update:

Over the past week, Peter, along with several community members, have carefully sifted through each room of the house to recover important documents, artwork, furniture, and other sentimental items.

Peter has moved into his new temporary home and the insurance has seemed the house salvageable and will begin the remediation and rebuild. This is going to be a long process but moving in the right direction.
