Hello! My name is Peter Kim, and I am a recent graduate from Vanderbilt University, where I studied physics and classical languages. More exciting though, this Easter I received news that I had been accepted into the Novitiate of the Eastern Province Dominicans of St. Joseph as a clerical candidate, meaning I will be studying towards becoming a Dominican friar and priest.
“Dominican” is the name fondly applied to the family known as the Order of Preachers, a group of religious nuns, friars, sisters and laypeople. Its founder, St. Dominic, established the order in 1216, over 800 years ago, as a response to an error known as Albigensianism, which saw the material world as evil rather than good, and which thus failed to realize the beauty which the Father designed the world to be. The Dominicans thus live out the mission of praising, blessing, and preaching the God who both created the material world and loved it so much that His Son took on flesh - material itself - for its restoration.
St. Dominic's deep trust in the Love of the Father, as seen in the created world, is what first truly attracted me to the saint and his friars, and has led me to now, when I have been formally invited by the Dominican Order to continue my call to holiness by living as a Dominican Friar, praising, blessing, and preaching the Father who loves us.
I thus have two requests from you. First, and most important, I need your support in prayer. I ask you to pray that the Lord sustain me (and sustain the other men accepted into the Novitiate class of 2019) in this calling. Without prayer, our efforts in this way of life will be impossible, just as St. Dominic himself realized when founding the Order back in the 13th century, therefore establishing a group of cloistered nuns dedicated to praying for the efforts of their Dominican brothers and sisters serving in the world.
Secondly, I ask that you consider joining me in this calling. When I was accepted into the Novitiate, I was accepted on the condition that I pay off my student loans by the date of entry, which is July 22nd this year. Realizing that I cannot do this alone, I ask you to consider donating to help me become a Dominican Friar and accomplish my desire to share God Incarnate with the world. “Some give by going to the missions, some by giving to the missions. Without both, there are no missions,” as St. Therese of Lisieux once said. So, I ask that you prayerfully consider joining me financially in responding to God’s call if it aligns with your ability to give. Even if you are in a position to give only a small amount, I encourage you to remember that every bit counts!
Be assured of my prayers for you, and please, please keep me in yours.
In Christ Incarnate,
Peter Kim
