Help Peter Fund a Barrister

My name is Peter McGrath.

Seven years ago (11/02/2014) I was admitted to hospital with a minor injury. A cascade of medical disasters unfolded at Whiston hospital. Instead of staying overnight as originally intended, I was hospitalised for 9 weeks and had 95% of my large intestine removed. I left hospital with a colostomy bag and a catheter. I walked with the aid of a Zimmer frame.

After 8 months (15/10/2014) I returned for  a reverse ileostomy operation to remove my stoma , reconnect my bowel and let me lead a decent life. But things went wrong. My stomach burst open and my colon leaked faeces for a year afterwards. I spent 18 more weeks in Whiston hospital, (until 11/02/2014) and then a total of 21 weeks in Salford Royal Hospital Intestinal Failure Unit. My life had been ruined. At Salford Intestinal Failure Unit, miracles were performed, and I was kept alive and sepsis free by one of their magnificent surgeons.

I decided to act. There are many changes I felt that  Whiston hospital could make to improve the outcomes for their patients.  I wanted compensation of course. More than that, though I wanted them to implement systemic changes to their operational methods. Out of 21 beds at Salford Intestinal Failure Unit, 3 were occupied by people who had been transferred in one week from the same ward I was in.  The other 18 were from around 650 hospitals other hospitals, The Isle Of Man and Saudi Arabia.

I am an individual who cannot afford an experienced legal team. I am now only weeks away from trial. Whiston hospital have taken the position that no mistakes were made. I want them  to enforce systemic changes to benefit future patients. I do not want anyone to ever go through what I have been through. After 7 years of pain, suffering and hardship, the only way to do this is to go to trial.

I am now a 'litigant in person', with no lawyer and no barrister to help me.  I am facing the might of the NHS and a  partner in an internationally acclaimed law firm. The wealth and power of the two combined entities is enormous. I have a strong case, but at times I have felt like withdrawing my claim due to the stress and anxiety of the upcoming 5-day trial.  The workload of preparing for trial on my own is enormous. I refuse to give in. I am able to find funding for my colorectal expert, a care and assistance expert and a psychiatrist to give their interpretation of events during the upcoming 5-day trial. It is scheduled for 12th-16thApril.

There is a saying,  ' A man who represents  himself has a fool for a client.’ I have no money for a barrister. I fear I will be overpowered by  the opposing experts in law, even though I believe  my grievances are real, and my cause is just.

My barrister fees would be £10,000, plus a daily rate of £1,750 after day 1 of the 5-day trial. The total is £17,000.  Originally I was naive and hoped I could raise this amount, but now I am more realistic. I have Mckenzie friend to help me in court, but I will need paid legal  help on a regular basis until then.

If my claim is succesful, or if I receive an acceptable payment offer before trial, I will refund all moneys paid to my  GOFUNDME ACCOUNT fund. I will also donate £10,000 also to an institution that saved my life.
