29 years ago, Peter Deng was a 5-year-old orphan in a little village in South Sudan, with dreams of getting an education so he could help other kids like him. At age 12, Peter walked out of South Sudan to a refugee camp in Kenya, which he heard was educating young refugees. In 2007, he made his way to Burlington, VT, USA, and got himself a scholarship to study accounting at Champlain College, and eventually earned citizenship. While at Champlain, he started a non-profit, Deng Opportunities Foundation, to fund the education of other South Sudanese orphaned children. To date the foundation has paid for the education of 65 orphans at good schools in Uganda and Kenya. Along the way, Peter built a small tax accounting practice serving the immigrant population in Vermont, as well as several small businesses in South Sudan, despite a raging civil war. Peter lives very simply, giving most of his earnings to these projects
Peter Deng
Today, the civil war is over and the country is turning to rebuilding itself and providing a better life for its citizens. South Sudan remains one of the poorest countries on earth but with dedicated people like Peter Deng, and you, there is hope.
Peter’s most recent project is to build a world class high school in Juba the capital city. He has recruited Felix Sailo, a leading educator in Kenya, to serve as the new school’s first principal and to lead the building of the curriculum and faculty. The physical facility, largely funded from Peter’s personal resources is nearing completion. But like many construction projects around the world, the project has faced significant delays and cost overruns.
You can help Peter, by donating today, to help the children of South Sudan build a prosperous future for generations to come. Our goal is to raise $60,000, which will fund the completion and fit up of this 600-student capacity school.
Thank you very much for your help
