Help Petar to achieve his dream of studying biomedical sciences

Dear reader,

This letter is a simple request for help. My name is Petar Kosijer and I’m a graduate student of molecular biology from University of Novi Sad, Serbia! I graduated from my bachelor studies with the average grade 9,59 and my first master studies of microbiology with the highest average grade 10. Along with my bachelor studies I took part in two Erasmus+ exchange programmes in Finland at two universities in Turku: University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University. During my Erasmus+ programmes I managed to do several lab internships at different institutes which helped me improve my existing laboratory skills, expand knowledge on molecular biology and gain experience on biomedical imaging and nanotechnology. I also learnt Finnish by taking part in the language course at the University of Turku.

After I obtained my bachelor degree, driven by wonderful and helpful experiences in Turku, I applied for my second master studies at the University of Turku. During my application period I was eligible as a non-EU student to apply for the university scholarship that was covering the tuition fee, which costs 12 000 euros per year. After the application round and the interview I got admitted for the master programme of Biomedical Imaging at the University of Turku, but unfortunately I didn’t receive the scholarship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and limited number of scholarships. Therefore, I decided to defer my studies for the next academic year.

One of the most important reasons why I want to study at the University of Turku is the fact that this university has been the pioneer of biomedical imaging studies in the world and both Turku universities are widely known and praised for the work and research in the field of biomedical imaging. Personally, I want to study Biomedical Imaging, because this scientific field is widely applicable and can lead us to the discovery of the most relevant drugs and eradicate many of the existing diseases. Biomedical Imaging doesn’t only focus on biology, but it focuses on physics, chemistry and other related sciences and therefore it is important for expanding my knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of microscopy. I also find the use of biomedical imaging tools as essential and important for my personal academic and scientific future, as I plan to integrate public health, molecular biology and nanotechnology in my researches.

I am asking for your help to obtain additional financial help for my tuition fee. My stepfather and I are trying to live modest lives, save essential money for life in Finland (including health insurance, costs of the residence permit and plane tickets). During the pandemic, in September we lost our beloved mother and wife Isidora Žebeljan because of health problems with which she has been struggling for a long period. After her death we have been living on our wages and it has been difficult because we have to pay necessary bills and taxes. My mum would be proud and happy if she was witnessing my master studies abroad. I want to do this not only for myself, but in gratitude for all her and love, compassion and support, which she had for me until her death.

I would be extremely grateful for your compassion and financial support.

Sending love and best regards from Belgrade,
Petar Kosijer
