My name is Peta, and several years ago I retrained as a clinical psychologist, helping people through some of the most challenging and vulnerable times in their lives. I never imagined I’d be writing something like this — but life has taken an unexpected turn, and I now find myself in a position where I need help from the people around me.
In October 2025, I was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer, with metastases to my spine, ribs, and pelvis. It was a devastating shock, especially since my last routine mammogram, through BreastScreen in February 2024, showed no concerns. Only later did I learn that I have Breast Density Category D, the highest density level. Dense breast tissue can make cancers extremely difficult to detect on standard 2D mammograms, and this may explain why my cancer wasn’t visible at the time.
I share this because I hope it helps other women advocate for themselves — to ask about breast density, understand its implications, and consider supplemental imaging if needed.
Why I'm Asking for Help
This year has already been financially difficult. My partner was made redundant in June, and I became the sole income earner. We were already stretched thin — and then came my diagnosis.
Now, with treatment soon beginning, I’ll have to reduce my work as a psychologist. It’s not just the physical strain of treatment; it’s also the ethical responsibility. Therapy depends on emotional continuity and presence — things I may not always be able to offer during ongoing treatment.
At the same time, to access essential family support, we’ve relocated from Melbourne to Queensland, which has brought significant costs: storage, petrol, accommodation during the move, and starting over in a new location.
Together, we are now navigating:
The sudden loss of or reduction in my income
My partner being currently unemployed
Relocation and setup costs
Ongoing treatment expenses (travel, medications, appointments)
An uncertain timeline for recovery and work.
This is why I’m asking for help.
Every contribution — no matter the size — will go directly toward:
Living costs should I be unable to work
Travel costs for treatment, appointments, and scans
Out-of-pocket medical expenses
Relocation and setup costs after needing to move closer to family
A small buffer so I can focus on treatment, rest, and healing.
Many people have reached out wanting to help but are unsure how. This is one practical and deeply meaningful way to support both me and my partner during a really difficult time. Your contribution truly helps create stability and gives me the space I need to concentrate on fighting this disease.
Thank you — sincerely — for your kindness, generosity, and support.
