On the evening of the earthquake in La Guaira State, Venezuela, the lives of the Perez Ocejo family changed forever. At 5:04 p.m., a powerful earthquake struck, followed by another just one minute later. Within moments, the Costa Brava Building in Los Corales, where my sister, her husband, and their three-year-old daughter lived, collapsed completely. They had no opportunity to evacuate. Because of the widespread destruction, blocked roads, and the collapse of many buildings throughout the area, our family was unable to reach the site until nearly 2:00 a.m. When they arrived, they found people gathered around the building, but there were no organized rescue efforts taking place. Then, they heard a woman crying out for help. As they moved closer, they realized it was my sister, trapped alive beneath the rubble. She told them she was thirsty and shared the heartbreaking news that her husband and their precious three-year-old daughter had died instantly. She said they did not suffer and did not feel any pain. She remained trapped beneath the debris, lying above her daughter's body. After more than six hours, only two firefighters arrived to respond—not only to this building but to more than fifteen collapsed buildings in the surrounding area. They did everything they could to reach her, but after a short time she stopped responding. They could only see her hand, and there was no pulse. After hours of hope and desperate waiting, our family received the devastating news that she had passed away. Recovery efforts were later halted by authorities while our loved ones remained trapped beneath the rubble.

Today, our family is grieving the unimaginable loss of three beloved family members while also trying to help relatives who have lost their homes and everything they owned. We are asking for your support during this incredibly difficult time. Every donation, no matter the amount, will go toward funeral and burial expenses for our loved ones, food, medicine, and other essential supplies for displaced family members, helping rebuild a safe home for those who survived, and emergency assistance for our family as they begin to recover from this tragedy.

A las 5:04 p.m., un fuerte terremoto sacudió la zona, seguido de otro tan solo un minuto después. En cuestión de momentos, el edificio Costa Brava en Los Corales, donde vivían mi hermana, su esposo y su hija de tres años, colapsó por completo. No tuvieron oportunidad de evacuar.

Debido a la destrucción generalizada, las carreteras bloqueadas y el colapso de muchos edificios en toda el área, nuestra familia no pudo llegar al lugar hasta casi las 2:00 a.m. Cuando llegaron, encontraron personas reunidas alrededor del edificio, pero no había esfuerzos de rescate organizados.

Entonces, escucharon a una mujer pidiendo ayuda.

Al acercarse, se dieron cuenta de que era mi hermana, atrapada con vida bajo los escombros. Les dijo que tenía sed y compartió la desgarradora noticia de que su esposo y su pequeña hija de tres años habían fallecido instantáneamente. Dijo que no sufrieron y que no sintieron dolor.

Después de más de seis horas, solo llegaron dos bomberos para atender la emergencia, no solo de este edificio sino de más de quince edificios colapsados en los alrededores. Hicieron todo lo posible por llegar hasta ella, pero al poco tiempo dejó de responder. Solo podían ver su mano, y no tenía pulso.

Después de horas de esperanza y desesperada espera, nuestra familia recibió la devastadora noticia de que había fallecido.

Posteriormente, las autoridades suspendieron las labores de recuperación mientras nuestros seres queridos permanecían atrapados bajo los escombros.

Hoy, nuestra familia está de luto por la inimaginable pérdida de tres seres queridos, mientras también intenta ayudar a familiares que han perdido sus hogares y todo lo que tenían.
