Last Friday night, we found Pepper crying in his litter box. We immediately rushed him to the emergency vet. There, we quickly found out he had a urinary obstruction. They sedated him and put a catheter in him. They also found out he had some bladder stones that would require surgery to remove. They were unable to do surgery until Monday. As many of you know, staying multiple days in the emergency vet is very expensive alone, let alone with a surgery on top of it. Pepper had a successful surgery on Monday and we brought him home Tuesday. Tuesday night he re-obstructed so we had to bring him back in. He had the catheter put back in on Wednesday. Thursday morning, we received a call that overnight he had managed to get his cone off and pull out his catheter. His catheter was replaced, and our vet recommended we take him back to the emergency vet as they have 24/7 care to be able to watch him and make sure it does not get pulled again. So, we transferred him back to the emergency vet to stay for a few nights with the catheter in and hopefully some of the swelling comes down and he doesn’t re-obstruct once they pull it again. They said if he re-obstructs again, they recommend PU surgery which basically removes the narrow part of a male cat's urethra. They quoted this to be between $4000-6000. This would be on top of the hospitalization fees. We had a pretty good savings saved up for emergencies like this but we are eating into it very quickly. Our handsome boy is only two years old. He is the sweetest boy and we hate seeing him like this and just want him home and healthy.
