Pepe is our sweet, very large, and loving mixed-breed dog who was rescued from a meat truck route in Asia. During our three years living there, I worked with an organization dedicated to saving dogs from slaughter, and together we found homes for around 300 dogs. Many of these dogs had special needs, and our hearts opened to caring for those who needed extra help. Pepe was just a puppy when we found him in a ditch, and after treating him for parasites, our plan was to find him a loving home. But when COVID hit, we couldn’t leave him behind, so he became part of our family.

Pepe is now 100 pounds and has brought so much joy to our lives. Unfortunately, about a week ago, Pepe injured his good knee—he already had one bad one—and now he can’t walk at all. We’ve been through similar challenges before with our other dog, Bentley, who lost his ability to walk but is now happy with wheels, surgery, and therapy. We know what’s ahead for Pepe: he needs custom-made wheels because of his unique build, and surgery to give him the best chance at recovery and a normal life. The expenses are significant and will continue for some time, but we’re committed to giving Pepe the care he deserves.
