Last week, our cat Pepe Silvia went into labor.

What should have been a quiet, joyful morning turned into a medical emergency that changed everything.

Pepe labored for hours, but her contractions stalled. We rushed her to the emergency vet, where X-rays revealed that she still had kittens inside her who could not be delivered naturally. The veterinary team tried medication to restart labor, but it failed. Pepe was rushed into surgery for an emergency C-section.

She survived the surgery. Her kittens were born into critical circumstances.

Over the next two days, my wife and I did everything we possibly could. We bottle-fed around the clock, kept the kittens warm, monitored their breathing, rushed them to the vet when they declined, and held them as they fought. The veterinary staff tried desperately to save them as well.

One by one, despite round-the-clock care, every kitten passed.

And then Pepe herself developed a serious post-surgical infection.

She was hospitalized, placed on IV antibiotics, fluids, oxygen, pain management, and constant monitoring. The team ran repeated blood panels and imaging to keep her alive, they thought she might need to remain hospitalized for several days.

Pepe is not “just a cat.” She is family. She trusted us completely. And we did not hesitate to authorize lifesaving care – because when a life is in front of you and suffering, you act.

What we did not anticipate was the financial aftermath.

Between the emergency C-section, hospitalization, ICU monitoring, diagnostics, medications, and follow-up care, Pepe’s veterinary bills now total $6,463.85

We are doing everything we can, but this amount is simply not something we can absorb on our own – especially while still grieving the loss of her kittens and trying to focus on Pepe’s recovery and continuing veterinary care.
