PENNY'S STORY:
I decided to go to the doctor because I had a sore shoulder I have had problems in the past with Bursitis and thought I would go and get it looked at and get a Cortisone injection before it got too bad again. I had also noticed that the Lymph nodes on my neck were sticking out so I decided to get the doctor to check this as well.
I saw a GP and he sent me off for an xray and ultrasound on my shoulder he seemed very unsure why my lymph nodes were sticking out so he also sent me for blood test as well.
I made a follow up appointment to receive my results, and my GP told me that yes it was Bursitis causing pain in my shoulder so we could arrange to have a Cortisone injection he also said blood test came back perfect so he was still concerned as to why my Lymph nodes were sticking out. He had another look at them and then asked me if I had noticed any lumps in my breasts. I said I was unsure so he sent me straight away for an ultrasound.
After my ultrasound was complete I was told to stay in the room for the doctor to come and speak with me it was then and there that I was told I have breast cancer.
After many appointments scans etc.
I finally met with an Oncologist who had a bit of a plan how we were going to treat this. After talking with him and an examination he felt my lymph nodes on my neck, he then told me "I am sorry but seing your Lymph nodes the cancer has already been circulating through your body so it means you have stage 4 which means its incurable."
If I decided not to go ahead with the chemo I would have less than 12 months to live, If I do go ahead i have a 28% chance of surviving 5 years, so we decided to hit it will the maximum we could so 2x chemo drugs plus 2 hormone blocking drugs.
After my first round of chemo I felt pretty terrible, I struggled to eat and drink, everything tasted horrible my hair started falling out. Just normal side effects but I got through the first round. After my second round of Chemo I felt terrible again but this time I was vomiting and also had diarrhea and a high temperature and couldn't keep anything down, not even water. I ended up going in to emergency
where I then got admitted I had blood transfusion, a platelet transfusion and potassium and Magnesium via IV. I was also really dehydrated and was about to be taken to ICU when finally my body started fighting back I spent 10 days in hospital.
I am now waiting for my 3rd round of Chemo which will be reduced by 20% so that hopefully I don't have such severe side effects as the last time.
