Pedro is in the Rabbit Mountain classroom, and had his leg amputated above the knee 2 weeks ago as a result of the bone cancer he was diagnosed with at age six. Pedro has remained NED (no evidence of disease) for over two years since completing frontline treatment, for which we are so thankful, but he hasn't caught a break from continuing surgeries and interventions to try to gain functionality in the leg where the tumor was located. Ultimately, the choice was made that amputation would give him a better quality of life.
Pedro is healing up very well, and looks forward to getting back into activities that he hasn't been able to participate in since his diagnosis - like mountain biking, snow sports, ball sports, and simply being able to RUN! He also loves to drive go-karts, and will need his go-kart to be adapted to have the throttle be hand controlled.
While his daily-use prosthetic will be covered by insurance, all these activity-related adaptations and extra prosthetics come at a cost (plus the adaptive lessons etc.) It has been so heartwarming to have such an outpouring of love and care from our community and many have asked how they can help. If anyone feels so inclined, we would be very grateful for any contributions towards adaptive equipment for Pedro as he starts this new chapter as an amputee!
