Meet Peach Pit. She needs help covering her vet care costs. And finding a new home.

While driving back North from New Orleans, I saw a hungry mama dog on the edge of a very busy highway. She is obviously still lactating from a recent litter, but my search in the immediate area didn't turn up any puppies. I was able to get this girl into my car and called animal control to find out where to bring her. Unfortunately, the location I was given is out of jurisdiction for where Peach was found. And the correct shelter was closed on the one day I happened to be driving through. I was stuck.

Even though Rankin County Animal Shelter was unable to take Peach Pit in, they were amazingly helpful. They scanned her for a chip, gave her DAPP and Bordetella vaccines, and handed me a dose of dewormer to give her. They even provided me with a crate, blankets, food and water bowls, a bag of food, and a full box of puppy pads. And refused to take any money I tried to give them.

With no shelter to take Peach Pit to, no chip to track down and owner, and no other place to bring her...I only had one decision. Peach Pit is coming to Minnesota. I was able to get a recommendation for a vet that had an opening, allowing Peach to get her rabies, fecal exam, heartworm test, flea prevention, and a proheart 6 month injection. Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, Peach Pit is heartworm positive. She will need a retest to confirm and then to begin treatment.

While I look for a rescue to take Peach in, I will be doing my due diligence to make sure stray holds in Jackson County are followed. My friends in the Jackson area is also keeping an eye on lost pets pages to see if anyone is looking for her. If she does have a home to go back to, I will bring her back south. Otherwise, this sweet mama will be a Minnesota girl.

If Peach Pit is pulled into a rescue, then any money raised beyond her initial vet bill and supplies will be donated to that rescue for her care.
