UPDATE AUGUST 31, 2017
Sam Hamill continues to experience financial pressures relative to his ongoing illness. Please consider donating to assist him now.
Sam Hamill, one of our most revered poets, translators, anti-war activists, and founder of Copper Canyon Press, needs your help. After he collapsed in Mexico and ended up in ICU, in addition to his advancing COPD, he was diagnosed with a heart condition and diabetes. The cost of his emergency health care was $42,000. The hospital tried to block his release until he paid the amount in full. His daughter, Eron, had to fly down to force his release and is currently helping him recover until he is well enough for travel back to his home. The hospital does not accept Medicare, and his secondary insurance company will only pay a portion of the expenses. Associated and ongoing out-of-pocket expenses will likely exceed $30,000. But with insurance companies and an oversees hospital, who knows? He and Eron must remain in Mexico until he is well enough for return travel to the U.S.
Raising $50,000 for Sam will first cover medical expenses, then if anything is left over it will go toward out-of-pocket expenses associated with the ambulance and recovery in Mexico, getting resituated at home with continuing home health care, and perhaps, if we are lucky, publishing a final book.
Sam has given us so much. Worlds of poetry, enduring translations, the enormous vision and gift of Copper Canyon Press, of which he was founding editor and editor for 32 years, and, later, Poets Against the War, and the tireless championing of new and established poets around the world. He is a National Treasure, and we thank you for helping to care for him. We need to take care of him. Thank you for your help.
