Help cover Penny's $1,800 per day emergency vet bills
Donation protected
Hello - I'm creating this fundraiser to raising money to help cover emergency vet bills for Penny, a 2-year-old English Bulldog; the precious fur child of Bryan Byrne (United States Marine Corps veteran, retired police officer, and generally just an all-around great human being).
April 22 - 24: Penny was acting kind of sick, acting like she couldn't poop much, but could still get a little nugget or two to pass. Bryan was watching her carefully, concerned, but hoping she would get over her bug on her own. (You know - like most of us pet parents do. Worrying, but trying to walk that line of figuring out when the right time is to intervene.)
April 25: Bryan rushed Penny to South Metro Animal Emergency Care in Apple Valley when she also started vomiting. She also couldn't pass poop anymore at this point.
The vets at the clinic were miscommunicating between themselves and to Bryan, one suggesting it may be time to say goodbye, then backtracking and saying he'd read part of her chart wrong.
Her blood pressure was high and irregular, causing her to vomit blood and have bloody diarrhea, which was making her condition even more difficult to manage. Her blood work came back abnormal, with indicators suggesting inflamed intestines or some kind of blockage; but no indications of a virus or other illness so far.
Penny was kept in the e-hospital overnight to keep receiving IV fluids and medication, but her daily cost of being in the hospital is currently about $1,800 per day - a cost Bryan cannot afford to keep paying on his own.
Penny was in danger of needing a blood transfusion and/or possibly needing to be transferred to an even higher level of veterinary care at the university veterinary hospital (which would/will be more expensive if it comes to that).
April 26 - As of Bryan's last update from the vets, Penny's blood pressure is looking better, she's staying hydrated, and was able to walk around some in the clinic. However, there's still no real answers as to why she's been so very ill or when she may be stable enough to be discharged. She's not out of the woods yet, and she's still going to need a lot of TLC from the vet staff.
Our initial fundraising goal is $7,500 - to cover 4 days of care at the emergency vet plus fees. This goal will be updated as we get a better prognosis, diagnosis, and other information about Penny's condition.
April 27: Well there's good news and there's bad news.

The good news is that Miss Penny is continuing to slowly improve.
The bad news is she still needs to stay at the hospital, and Bryan has been told that her care is now $1998 per day. No explanation for the increase from the hospital, even though she's a less critical case now. His bill for this emergency is very near $5,000 already.
Thank you to everyone who has already donated to help support Penny and Bryan so far - unfortunately - there's still quite a journey to go before Penny can come home.
