At the start of the most recent Texas freeze and snow, our family suffered the tremendous loss of my father, Miguel Cortez. Toward the tail end of January, a tumor was discovered in his brain that was confirmed to be a form of brain cancer. While waiting for treatment, he contracted COVID which unfortunately accelerated the severity of the illness. Though nobody plans for these things, the storm and pandemic have left our family unprepared to deal with the financial burden of laying a loved one to rest.
