Hi - this is Fiona - the cat rescue lady. On Thursday one of the most awful things imaginable happened to me.
After packing/unpacking my car to do errands I drove out of the Close and heard a clunk under bonnet. I then seen a cat frantically running sideways and ran into neighbours bushes! Oh no I ran and grabbed towel and blankets from home and found Lyra - my next door neighbours cat - my rescue cat she adopted laid there, shallow breathing and blood coming out of her mouth.
I’ve collected many RTA cats both dead and alive and thought the worst. Me who is normally calm was an hysterical woman sobbing and shouting I’ve hurt her she’s going to die - oh no.
I quickly pulled myself together and wrapped her in a towel and blanket and drove her to Clifton Lodge where she is registered. They needed to do X-rays to assess damage which of course I authorised - no questions or doubt.
I managed to get my neighbour collected from work and brought her to the vets. Me crying and upset that I had hurt her cat. I know it was not anyone’s fault but me a cat rescuer harming a Cat ⬛ its soul destroying. She had been hiding out in my bonnet for a while and I had no way of knowing she was there when I set off. She never ventures far and we live in a very quiet cul de sac. I was so so gutted and upset as was her owner, my friend, my neighbour!
The X-rays confirmed that she had no breaks in her body at all! But her eye wasn’t functioning properly, some head swelling and a fracture to her jaw! A very lucky escape but not out of the woods.
We transferred her through to Wilson Vets in Bishop Auckland as they are a 24 vet.
We honestly thought she wasn’t going to make it but….
Thursday night went ok. On high dose meds and fluids via drip. Friday bloods all came back normal. Lung swelling had gone down and she was fit enough for surgery.
Today Lyra had her jaw wired, eye removed and one tooth extracted! She also has a perforated ear drum - ouch! She’s expected to make a full recovery and may be able to come home tomorrow. She has a feeding tube and will still be on pain relief until her jaw heals and she can eat again on her own. It’s the best possible outcome and I am so happy for her and my neighbour however….. Clifton lodge was £1000 for xray and treatment, surgery was £2,000 and the stays, fluid, pain meds etc are racking up to about £800. I used part of my wages to pay Clifton, Hazel managed to scrape £1,000 together but we are really struggling to fund the rest.
I would really appreciate any help you can give to us towards the cost of her vet care. I hate that everything revolves around money but no way could we get her PTS just because of an eye and jaw injury. She’s 4 years old with a full life ahead of her ❤️
Thank you
