Meet Bhoot. On January 17th, Bhoot was diagnosed with Persistent Right Aortic Arch at only 6 weeks old.
Bhoot was born in the beginning of December in New Iberia along with his twelve siblings. His mother, Tibby, was one of the outside dogs who were neglected and abused by their “family”. They would chase her and the other dogs with 4-wheelers and shoot at them. Tibby got pregnant and was threatened to be killed. They even dropped her off far away in attempt to dump her, but she eventually made her way back. A wonderful person named Alexis who opens her home and heart to dogs in need, saved Tibby. We (Top Tail Rescue) were asked to take her in and, of course, we did.
Fast forward a month later, the puppies are 4 weeks old and starting to eat food. We noticed that Bhoot was drastically smaller than the rest. They were more than twice his size. He got progressively worse over the next two weeks and was not able to keep any food down. We took him to our vet where they did tests and X-rays, and he was diagnosed with the very rare defect- Persistent Right Aortic Arch.
Our local vet referred us to MedVet in NOLA, which took a month to get an appointment. We were instructed to blend up canned puppy food with water and feed him upright, then burp him like a baby. He also needs to be kept upright for 30 minutes after eating to make sure that the food is digested properly. He eats small amounts 4-5 times a day. He is getting too big to hold up during eating and for the 30 minutes afterward. A ‘Bailey Chair’ is most commonly used for dogs with MegaEsophagus. It is quite similar to Bhoot’s condition, and the chair would be wonderful for him. These chairs are custom made and cost a few hundred dollars. Bhoot will need to eat with this chair for the rest of his life.
We had our consultation with MedVet, and they told us that he will need a CT and an Ultrasound of his abdomen before he can have his PRAA corrective surgery. They gave us an estimate of $7,200 which doesn’t include all of the extra fees and hospital stay.
Many people have told us to put him down, not waste our money/time on him, etc. We love Bhoot, and he deserves a shot at life just like everyone else. All 12 of his siblings and mother have found their forever homes, and Bhoot’s health condition is holding him back from finding his. He acts like a normal puppy and doesn’t let his condition stop him.
Please consider donating to Bhoot’s Journey. This boy is relying on us to give him another shot at a healthy life. If everyone can donate $5 it will go a long way. Every little bit helps. All donations will go to his Bailey Chair and his Surgery.
