Help pay for Hip Arthroscopy Surgery

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Oscar Santos, and I am fundraising for a Hip Arthroscopy surgery.

The reason for this GoFundMe is because I need help paying for the surgery. Without insurance, it can cost between $50,000-60,000, and my current insurance does not cover the surgery with the doctor I have chosen. Additionally, I have asked about the price with insurance and the hospital will not be able to give me a response until the process starts. I plan to get the surgery done with Doctor Joshua Harris at Houston Methodist Hospital because of the many success stories from many of his previous patients. My family has already helped to cover most of the previous treatments, and they are currently trying to switch over to a new insurance to help pay less out of pocket, but the process is proving to take longer than expected. Even so, we are not sure if we will be able to afford the surgery.

Brief backstory,

I was originally born in the country of El Salvador and lived there until the age of five when my family was given the opportunity to immigrate to the United States. I would go on to live an average American life, and when I made it to high school, I decided to join the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) unit where I learned the importance of service, discipline, and teamwork. Joining the program also gave me a newfound appreciation for the opportunity the United States gave my family and I when we moved here. Because of this, I decided to give back to this country and made it a goal to become a United States Marine Corps Officer. I would apply for and eventually earn the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship and attend the NROTC program at Prairie View A&M University.

Everything had been going fine throughout my time in the program until the summer before my junior year of college when I was struck with a hip injury called Femoroacetabular impingement (or hip impingement). The injury itself comes with a pain that never leaves and increases in intensity whenever I walk around or run. Because of this, it has impacted me negatively not just physically but mentally as well as I am not allowed to participate in any physical training. I have been through multiple doctors and months' worth of physical therapy, each leading to no resolution for my injury. The only option I have left is surgery.

Because of my injury, the Marine Corps will not allow me to commission regardless of the success of the surgery due to the rigorous physical demands of the Marine Corps. However, the Navy has given me a possible chance to commission as a Naval Officer pending a full recovery with the surgery.

This is not just about the surgery, it is about me being able to give back to the country that gave my family and I an amazing opportunity and chance to live here, regardless of which military branch I serve.

I am planning on getting the surgery in January or February of 2022. I appreciate any amount of donations, and the timeframe that I need these funds is around January.
