Help Pax Get a Life-Saving Diabetic Alert Dog

Our sweet 6-year-old son, Paxton — or Pax, as we lovingly call him — was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in June of 2022, at just 3 years old; a diagnosis that changed our world overnight. For the past three years, our lives have been centered around keeping him safe, managing blood sugar levels to the best of our ability, and doing everything we can to make sure he stays healthy and happy.

While Pax wears a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) to track his blood sugar, the harsh reality is that CGMs are not always accurate or fast enough. They consistently lag behind his actual blood sugar levels, especially during rapid changes — and for a growing, and very athletic/energetic little boy like Pax, those changes can happen in the blink of an eye. This can be especially dangerous for a young type one diabetic like Pax who is completely hyper/hypo-unaware. This means that he is unable to feel his high or low blood sugars at all. That’s where a Diabetic Alert Dog comes in.

These specially trained dogs can detect dangerous blood sugar highs and lows before they show up on a CGM. They use their incredible sense of smell to alert us — day or night — to life-threatening changes, sometimes 15-30 minutes before any device would. For Pax, that early warning could be the difference between a normal day and an emergency.

This dog would not just be a service animal, but a constant companion, a source of confidence, and a guardian angel by Pax’s side — while out and about, during play, and while he sleeps. It would give him the freedom to just be a kid, and give us the peace of mind that he’s never alone in this fight.
