Paul, my friend, is facing a major health challenge that has changed his life in many ways. He was recently diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. To give himself the best chance at recovery, Paul is undergoing a stem cell transplant along with multiple intensive treatments. Through it all, he remains hopeful and determined, drawing strength from his deep love for the ocean and the community that surrounds him.
Paul’s connection to the water runs deep. He’s a lifeguard at Hickam Beach, a passionate stand-up paddle racer and surfer, and someone who finds peace and joy in diving and fishing. The ocean isn’t just a place for Paul—it’s a way of life, and it’s where he feels most at home.
Paul has also lived with Type 1 Diabetes, continuing to push himself physically and mentally while competing in paddle races and staying active in the ocean community. His strength and resilience have always defined him.
While Hawaiʻi has incredible healthcare, the specialized stem cell transplant Paul needs is not available locally. He has had to travel to Seattle to receive care at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, where he is currently undergoing extensive testing and treatment and is expected to remain for several months.
Being away from home has created a significant financial burden. In addition to medical expenses, Paul must cover temporary housing in Seattle, food, transportation, and travel costs, while still maintaining his regular expenses back home in Hawaiʻi, including rent, bills, and insurance.
Paul is also continuing his college education online through the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College, while maintaining additional student health insurance to help cover treatment costs—adding even more financial strain during this time.
The funds raised here will go directly toward helping Paul with housing, basic living expenses, and medical-related costs during his treatment and recovery.
If you’re able to support Paul’s journey, whether through a donation or simply sharing this fundraiser, it would mean more than words can express. Together, we can help Paul focus on healing and getting back to the ocean and the life he loves.
