My mother, Paula Najera, was scheduled for a knee replacement surgery on October 14. Before the procedure, she went to her primary doctor for medical clearance, which led to further cardiology testing. On October 7, during an appointment at Piedmont Rockdale Hospital, Paula suffered a heart attack. The doctors told us she needed open heart surgery, and she was rushed to Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, where she was admitted and intubated. Upon admission, we learned she had suffered a major heart attack and had to be put on a heart balloon to help her heart beat, since her heart was only working at 20%. Later, the doctors explained that open heart surgery was not possible because she wouldn’t survive, and that she needed a heart transplant. Paula was placed on the stage 2 waiting list for a donor heart.

On October 24, we received the call we had been praying for—a donor had been found. With mixed emotions, we prepared for the transplant, and on October 25, Paula received her new heart. Her recovery has been slow, but we are grateful every day for her progress and for the gift of life she received.
